Your Child's First Visit

mother preparing child patientYour child's first dental visit at St. Helens Pediatric Dentistry, will be to establish a good working relationship with you, the parent and the child. We want you and your child to be comfortable. We will:
•  ask questions to better understand your child's dental and health background, information such as being premature, diabetes, on going medications, or previous cavities may be important for Dr. Moore to know
•  perform a comprehensive dental examination, look for any signs indicating a problem, and ensure that teeth are coming in as they should
•  depending on the age of your child, we may complete a professional dental cleaning with our hygienist, discuss remineralization therapy and take any necessary x-rays
•  finally, we will offer tips, education and offer nutritional advice and home care instruction. Dr. William Moore will take time to discuss any concerns or questions you may have, and prepare you for what you can expect during your child's oral development
•  if decay is present, Dr. Moore will discuss the appropriate treatment plan with you

What should parents do?

We ask that parents please help us make your child's first visit enjoyable and positive! We want your help to make your child's perception of the dentist office a positive one, how they feel about us is an indicator of how often they will be willing to come. We encourage parents and caregivers to use positive stories about visiting the dentist, songs and descriptive words to describe your child's upcoming visit.

Your words have power, a great way parents can help, is to avoid using words around your child that might cause unnecessary fear. Words including: needle, shot, drill or hurt, may cause your child preventable anxiety and make dental visits more difficult for your child. At St. Helens Pediatric Dentistry we will work with you to make your child's first dental visit an adventure that sets a positive foundation for the rest of their life.

We encourage parents to stay with their child throughout the duration of the initial examination, and then during future visits you can let your child join us on their own, depending on their age and comfort.
