Preventing cavities is something that every parent wants to help their kids do, but sometimes it can seem impossible when all they want to do is eat sugar and argue about brushing their teeth. There are a few simple tricks you can use to increase their chance of having healthy teeth and preventing tooth decay. • Dental sealants- One of the best ways to ensure that the ridges and grooves of your child's teeth are protected from the acids and bacteria that reside in their teeth after eating all day is to get dental sealants. This simple procedure applies a layer of protection to the molars in your child's mouth. This prevents food particles and bacteria from thriving in those hard to reach areas that oftentimes result in decay. • Brush for 2 minutes - It might seem like a long time, but 2 minutes of good tooth brushing is essential. Do what you can to make it fun for your child by allowing them to use a tooth brushing app on a Smart Phone or playing their favorite song for two minutes; whatever you can do to make the process fun to keep them going. • Watch their diet - It seems impossible to keep kids off of sugar, but it is necessary. A treat once in a while is acceptable as long as they brush their teeth shortly after consuming it. During the other times, however, try to encourage your child to eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and lean proteins. Keeping up a healthy diet that has little refined carbohydrates, sugar and grains will help to keep tooth decay away. Have questions about cavities? Contact us today for more information! |
